Standard targeting vs. contextual targeting?

Targeting level

In order to optimize the results and performance of your campaigns, it is important to fully understand how targeting level works. This is because it allows you to reach the users you want and filters the ones that you don't necessarily want to target to meet your goals and objectives.

During the first steps of creating your campaign, you will need to select between standard targeting and contextual targeting.

Standard targeting

Your ad will appear on brand safe only content and you will reach any users depending on the website(s) you have selected to appear on. This level of targeting can increase your brand awareness over a large audience. It is also the most cost-effective method.

In NCM, you will be able to choose your targeting by:

  • browser location

  • content language

Contextual targeting

Your ad will only appear on targeted pages of content that are contextually relevant to what you are advertising. This level of targeting allows you to reach more specific users that can further increase your campaign performance.

In NCM, you will be able to choose your targeting by:

  • browser location

  • content language

  • content type (i.e. category and topic)

  • content keywords

Tip 👍

If you are unsure of your specific level of targeting or unfamiliar with targeting in general, standard targeting is a good option to start with.
